Electrification of the Vinschgau Railway

With the first electric train between Malles and Lasa, the phased introduction of electric rail operation in the upper Vinschgau has begun – a milestone for the future of the Vinschgau Railway.

Under construction

On 21 June 2026, an electric Coradia Stream train entered regular passenger service on the Vinschgau Railway for the first time. It runs between Malles and Lasa and marks a significant step towards the full electrification of the line.

The new Coradia Stream trains are preparing the Vinschgau Railway for the future. The modern vehicles offer more room, a high level of travelling comfort and generous space for bicycles. Each train has 381 seats, reaches a top speed of 160 km/h and delivers around 3,000 kilowatts.

The Coradia Streams are designed for cross-border operation and can run on different power systems. Their multi-system capability and the European train control system ETCS give them the technical basis for future service development and for connecting South Tyrol more closely to international rail traffic.

Entry into service begins the phased introduction of electric rail operation in the upper Vinschgau. The new trains are the basis for developing the rail service further and open up new possibilities for capable, sustainable and attractive public transport.

The electrification of the Vinschgau Railway is one of the most significant infrastructure projects of recent years in South Tyrol. The first Coradia Stream entering passenger service is therefore not only a technical achievement but also a visible sign for the future of mobility in the Vinschgau.
